The most notable feature of this plant is its leaves. They are thick, fleshy, and covered in a dense layer of fine, velvety hairs, which gives them a soft, fuzzy texture. The leaves are a pale green or silvery-gray color, but the tips and edges are outlined in a very dark, nearly black or deep purplish-brown. This contrast gives the plant a striking and elegant appearance.
While it doesn’t flower frequently as a houseplant, a mature plant may produce small, bell-shaped flowers on a tall stalk.
Kalanchoe tomentosa ‘Nigra’ thrives in bright, indirect sunlight to full sun. The dark edging on the leaves becomes more pronounced and vibrant with adequate sun exposure. A spot in an east- or west-facing window is ideal.
This plant is very drought-tolerant. The “tomentosa” in its name means “felt-like,” which refers to the hairs that help it retain moisture. It’s crucial to let the soil dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. It is better to underwater than to overwater.
