Prefers bright, indirect light: This is the ideal condition for the plant to thrive and maintain its vibrant colors. A spot near an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south- or west-facing window works well. The variegation on the leaves will be most pronounced in good light.
Tolerates lower light: ‘Tropic Mary’ can adapt to lower light conditions, but its growth may slow down, and the variegation might become less distinct, causing the leaves to appear more green.
Avoid direct sunlight: Direct, harsh sun will scorch the leaves, causing them to develop brown or yellow patches.
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry: The goal is to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Use your finger to check the soil’s moisture level. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems for Dieffenbachias.
Avoid overwatering: Soggy soil can lead to root rot, which is often indicated by yellowing and drooping leaves. Make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom.
Reduce watering in winter: The plant’s growth slows in the cooler months, so it will need less frequent watering.
